Periodontics

OVERVIEW

Look after your gums with periodontics in Reading

Maintaining your oral health goes beyond just looking after your teeth; your gums play a vital role in supporting your smile. If you are looking for professional care and periodontics in Reading, our experienced team is here to help you prevent, diagnose, and treat gum disease, ensuring your mouth stays healthy for years to come.

What is periodontics and why is it important?

Periodontics is a specialised branch of dentistry that focuses exclusively on the inflammatory diseases that destroy the gums and other supporting structures around the teeth.

It is important because gum disease (periodontitis) is often a silent condition that doesn’t cause pain until it reaches an advanced stage. Without intervention, gum disease can lead to receding gums, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss. Furthermore, research increasingly links poor gum health to wider systemic health issues, including heart disease and diabetes.

How is gum disease diagnosed?

Diagnosing gum disease starts with a thorough clinical examination. During your visit, your dentist or periodontist will:

  • Measure pockets: Use a small dental probe to measure the space between your teeth and gums. Deeper pockets often indicate the presence of disease.
  • Check for bleeding: Healthy gums do not bleed during probing or brushing.
  • Assess bone levels: If gum disease is suspected, we may take digital X-rays to check for any loss of bone density around the roots of your teeth.
  • Review your history: We look at your medical history and lifestyle factors, such as smoking or diet, which can impact your gum health.

What does gum health treatment involve?

The goal of treatment is to thoroughly clean the pockets around the teeth and prevent further damage.

  1. Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing): This involves removing plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line. We also smooth out the root surfaces to discourage bacteria from reattaching.
  2. Antibacterial treatments: In some cases, we may use antimicrobial mouthwashes or specialised gels to help eliminate stubborn bacteria.
  3. Ongoing maintenance: Gum health is a long-term commitment. After the initial treatment, we will schedule regular hygiene appointments to monitor your progress and keep the disease at bay.

Frequently asked questions

While all periodontists are dentists, not all dentists are periodontists. A general dentist focuses on your overall oral health, including check-ups, fillings, and crowns. In contrast, a periodontist is a specialist who has completed several years of additional university training specifically in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease and dental implants. Think of your dentist as a primary care GP for your mouth, while a periodontist is the specialist you see if you have more complex or advanced issues involving the structures that support your teeth.

Whether gum disease can be fully reversed depends on how far it has progressed. The earliest stage, known as gingivitis, is characterised by red, swollen gums that may bleed during brushing; at this point, the condition is usually reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care. However, if it progresses to periodontitis, the damage to the bone and supporting tissues becomes permanent. While we cannot undo bone loss, periodontics in Reading can successfully manage the infection, stopping it in its tracks and preventing further damage so you can keep your natural teeth for as long as possible.

The primary cause of gum disease is the buildup of plaque, a sticky, colourless film of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth. If plaque isn't removed through regular brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar (calculus), which only a dental professional can remove. The bacteria in this buildup release toxins that irritate the gums and trigger an inflammatory response from your body. While bacteria are the main culprit, other factors like smoking, genetics, hormonal changes, and certain medical conditions like diabetes can make you more susceptible to the infection.

Modern periodontal treatments are designed with patient comfort as a priority. For deep cleaning procedures like scaling and root planing, we typically use a local anaesthetic to numb the area, ensuring you don't feel any pain during the process. You might experience some mild sensitivity or soreness for a day or two after the treatment, but this is usually easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Our team is particularly experienced with nervous patients, and we take every step to ensure your visit is as relaxed and stress-free as possible.

Prevention starts with a consistent daily routine to disrupt the bacteria in your mouth. You should brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes using a fluoride toothpaste, ideally with an electric toothbrush for a more thorough clean. Because a toothbrush cannot reach the tight spaces between your teeth, daily flossing or the use of interdental brushes is essential, as this is often where gum disease starts. Beyond cleaning, maintaining a healthy diet low in sugary snacks and avoiding tobacco products will significantly strengthen your gums and improve your body’s ability to fight off infection.
