Root canal treatment

OVERVIEW

Restore your teeth with root canal treatment in Reading

If you are experiencing tooth pain or have been told you may need an extraction, root canal treatment (also known as endodontics) could be the solution to saving your natural smile. At our practice, we use advanced techniques to ensure the procedure is comfortable, effective, and stress-free.

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to treat infection or inflammation at the centre of a tooth. Deep inside every tooth is the “pulp,” which contains nerves and blood vessels. If this pulp becomes damaged or infected, it can cause significant pain or lead to an abscess.

The root canal treatment involves removing the infected pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and then sealing it with a high-quality filling material. This stops the infection from spreading and allows you to keep your natural tooth rather than having it removed.

When is a root canal needed?

A root canal is typically necessary when the dental pulp is damaged by deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack or chip. You might need a root canal if you notice:

  • Severe toothache, especially when biting or chewing.
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures.
  • Discolouration or darkening of the tooth.
  • Swelling or tenderness in the nearby gums.
  • A persistent or recurring pimple on the gums (an abscess).

What happens during your treatment?

We understand that root canals have a reputation for being uncomfortable, but modern dental technology means the experience is now very similar to getting a standard filling.

  1. Preparation: We start by numbing the area thoroughly with local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel a thing.
  2. Access & cleaning: A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth. Our dentist uses precision instruments to remove the diseased pulp and clean the root canals.
  3. Shaping & filling: The canals are shaped and disinfected. They are then filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to prevent further infection.
  4. Restoration: In most cases, a temporary filling is placed. During a follow-up visit, a permanent crown or large filling is usually fitted to protect the tooth and restore it to full function.

How do you care for your teeth after treatment?

After your procedure, your tooth might feel a little sensitive for a few days, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief. To ensure long-term success:

  • Avoid biting down on hard foods until the final restoration (crown) is in place.
  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene by brushing twice a day and flossing.
  • Attend your regular dental check-ups to monitor the health of the treated tooth.

Frequently asked questions

Root canal treatment often has a negative reputation for being painful, but it is often nowhere near as bad as you imagine. We use local anaesthetic to make the procedure relatively comfortable and often painless. Many patients compare it to having a standard filling, although it does take longer. The relief you feel from no longer being in pain due to an infected tooth will be well worth the treatment experience. After treatment, the tooth may be sensitive or tender for a few days due to inflammation of the surrounding tissues, but this can be managed with painkillers.

The main alternative to root canal treatment is to have your infected tooth extracted. We try to avoid this as much as possible, as it is much more beneficial for you to keep your natural tooth.

In most cases, the answer is yes. A crown acts like a protective helmet, encircling the remaining tooth structure to provide strength, prevent it from splitting under the pressure of chewing, and create a long-lasting seal that keeps bacteria out. While a small filling might suffice for front teeth in some instances, a crown is the gold standard for back teeth to ensure your restored smile remains functional for years to come.

Once your tooth has undergone root canal treatment, it will function exactly like the rest of your teeth and can be treated as such. Make sure you keep up with an excellent oral hygiene routine, including brushing and flossing twice a day, and visit us for regular check-up appointments.

With proper restoration and care, it may last a lifetime. Proper dental care includes regular brushing and flossing, ǡ good diet, and periodic dental check-ups.
